Identity and Self Esteem: How To Reconnect With Yourself

Identity and Self-Esteem: How to Reconnect With Yourself | Therapy Ontario

Why Identity and Self-Esteem Matter

Your identity is how you see yourself. Your self-esteem is how you value yourself. When one feels unstable, the other usually does too.

If you’ve been feeling unsure, overly affected by others, or disconnected from yourself, this is often where the work begins.

Signs You’re Disconnected From Your Identity

You rely on others to make decisions

You feel different depending on who you’re with

You struggle to name your needs or preferences

You prioritize others over yourself

You seek reassurance to feel secure

These patterns are often rooted in learned ways of maintaining connection, not personal flaws.

How to Start Rebuilding Your Identity

1. Get Clear on Your Values

Ask yourself: What actually matters to me?

Your values help anchor your identity and guide your decisions.

2. Build Self-Trust Through Action

Self-esteem grows from what you do, not just what you think.

Small examples:

Setting a boundary

Saying what you really feel

Not overextending yourself

Each time you do this, you reinforce: I can trust myself.

3. Separate Your Worth From Others

Someone else’s behaviour does not define your value.

You can care about others without abandoning yourself.

4. Expect Discomfort

Growth can feel like:

Guilt

Anxiety

Uncertainty

This doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong, it means you’re doing something different.

If you find yourself struggling with your self esteem and your identity, support can help you feel more grounded and secure.
